The last kind of number on these boxes, and the only kind that is honest about being arbitrary, provided you notice. A model code sits in the title next to real figures, in the same typeface, and reads exactly like one of them.
Codes that look like specifications
Microwave listings in this catalog carry codes whose leading digits match the cavity figure printed beside them. Another carries digits close enough to its cavity figure to look deliberate. Two vacuum listings are titled with nothing but a bare string of digits, which on a shelf full of measurements reads like a measurement.
None of that is deception. It is a naming convention meeting a reader who has been trained by the rest of the box to treat digits as data.
What a code is good for
A model code identifies one product. That is a real use, and it is the reason this site records it as a field: it is the single string that reliably separates two listings whose stated figures are otherwise identical. The two entries in this catalog that state exactly the same cavity, wattage and feature list are separable by code and by finish, and by nothing else.
Where identification is required
Where a product carries a mandatory label, the identifying information required on it is set out in rule rather than left to the maker. The Federal Trade Commission energy labeling rule at Title 16 of the Code of Federal Regulations is the example linked below. Certification schemes also record a model designation; UL Solutions describes its standards work at the second link. Neither of those turns the digits in a code into a measurement.

- A cavity and a magnetron — A cavity with a door, a control panel and, in most of these listings, a turntable.

A model code is a label. The digits inside it are not on any scale, they are not comparable between makers, and they are frequently not comparable within one maker. Two codes in this catalog contain digits that match the cavity figure of the machine they sit on, which makes them the most convincing numbers here and the least meaningful.
