This is the number printed largest, and it is the one with the least behind it. It appears as a hyphenated compound on the front of the box and then never appears again in the listing text, except sometimes as a list of names that does not match it.

Where the count comes apart

Some listings name their modes and some do not. Where they do, the list is worth reading against the figure, because the two do not always agree. One air fryer names exactly as many modes as its figure claims. One pressure cooker names all of its. Most name fewer, and none of them says what fills the remainder.

Even a matching list does not settle anything. A listing that names broil, dehydrate, crisp, roast, reheat and bake under a matching figure has told you a row of words. It has not told you why reheat is a function of equal standing with crisp, or whether a machine that folds those two together and states a lower figure is doing less.

What the count is not

It is not a capacity. In this catalog the highest in-one figure in the pressure cooker category does sit on the largest pot, and the same figure appears twice on pots of different sizes, so the correlation breaks immediately.

It is not a wattage. Most listings that state an in-one figure state no wattage at all, and the two that share a wattage figure state different in-one figures.

It is not a promise about what the machine can stand in for. Where a listing says its machine stands in for others, that is the seller speaking, and this site does not confirm it.

Who governs the wording

There is no federal standard defining a cooking function, and this site does not claim there is one. What is published is the general requirement that an advertiser hold support for the objective claims it makes, set out by the Federal Trade Commission in its advertising substantiation policy statement. That document is linked below. It is a rule about evidence, not a definition of the word function.

What cannot be compared here

A count needs a unit before it can be compared, and not one listing in this catalog states what a single function consists of. Two pots here state the same figure and then name different sets of modes. Elsewhere a keep-warm mode and a pressure mode occupy one place each, at equal weight. Two of these figures can be put side by side, but nothing can be concluded from which is larger.

Put two of these side by side in Count Compare, or find out how many listings print the same one in Same Numbers Check.
